The SES PTSA made the decision last summer to forgo the auction in 2010 in favor of a fundraiser that did not rely heavily on consumption in a time of economic hardship. Instead, we invite all families to participate in this wonderful event that will promote literacy and a love of reading in addition to raising funds for SES. By holding a pledge-based event, our hope is that families will reach out to friends, neighbors, grandparents, co-workers — anyone who believes in SES's mission and loves literacy!

Wizard of Oz Information:

For those of you who have children participating in the Spring Musical this year we are requesting a small participation fee of $20.00 to help make possible the Wizard of Oz production.

We'd like to provide more information about this fee. In keeping with a fee we began last year in the Middle School Band program, we are asking for a direct financial contribution from students participating in programs that occur outside of school hours, which are supported by the PTSA. This type of participant support helps us make sure we can provide programs outside of school hours that enhance our students' learning experience. However, because these programs do not have the participation of all our students (unlike the work with our Sustainability Coordinators which all students participate in during the school year) we are asking for those participating in activities outside of regular school hours to bear a small part of the costs. We are, however, committed to every student who wants to participate in the Spring Musical, so while we ask for your contribution of this fee, it will be waived for students unable to pay. Thank you for your understanding and payment of $20.00.

Checks and cash will be collected at the beginning of rehearsals. A PTSA representative will be in the auditorium to gather the monies. Please write your checks to SES PTSA. Alternatively, you can deliver or mail and envelope to the office marked "PTSA: play participation" and asked that it be dropped in the safe.

Members need to renew their membership each year in order to vote during general meetings. The first general meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 6:30pm.

Families who were in the directory last year need not complete this form unless any contact information has changed.

Service Projects Recap

Last year, Sunnyside Environmental School students...

  • Raised $171.00 to help alleviate world hunger at The Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service Hunger Banquet.
  • Raised $1,800.00 to buy a latrine for a village in Nicaragua.
  • Hosted a dinner and dance, which raised $2,400.00 to buy an identity making machine for the Day Labor Site.
  • Made 2,400 lunches for the homeless.
  • Spent 12,000 hours pulling non-native invasive plants from local parks
  • Collected 200 pairs of socks, gloves, and mittens for those in need
  • Collected $540.00 to help build schools in Afghanistan through Pennies for Peace.
  • Helped save Oregon frogs at Oaks Bottom
  • Took bookmarks that tell how to save Pacific Forest frogs to pet shops
  • Helped save Laurelhurst Pond
  • Sent $600.00 to UNICEF for immunizations
  • Brought food boxes to four refugee families (based on foods that were familiar to them)
  • Worked at the Oregon Food Bank
  • Served 160 meals at Blanchet House
  • Taught 800 third graders about local habitat through Wildlife Tours
  • Recycled hundreds of pounds of clothes through the Useful Goods Exchange, clothing exchange and fashion show
  • Mentored younger buddies for 4000 hours throughout the school year
  • Collected hundreds of pounds of food for the Oregon Food Bank
  • Devoted 120 hours to planting native plants for wetland restoration
  • Performed 1,020 acts of kindness throughout the year, including delivering flowers, cleaning and picking up litter
  • Distributed hundreds of brochures to help increase pollinators on our school grounds
  • Bought a family a llama through Project Heifer
  • Collected 2 bins of pet supplies for the animals at the Humane Society
  • Washed 141 trays each day in the cafeteria to stop Styrofoam from being put into landfills
  • Educated city hall about accessibility in schools
  • Created a neighborhood Quest to be posted on the neighborhood association web page
  • Designed and built a new colonial garden with a fence painted by students
  • Helped lessen the urban-rural divide in Oregon through the 4-H rural exchange
  • Turned 10 pounds of cafeteria food waste into compost each day (that's 1,910 pounds for the year!)
